In the sad event neither of those things means anything to you, here’s the deal: Sanctuary Art Gallery in Gateshead are exhibiting artworks of a “conceptual and enquiring” theme titled Where Is My Mind? The selected works will touch upon the non-permanent and unattainable. Listening to the song should clear this up nicely. If you’re still lost, or would like to know more, but are turned off by the idea of square frames on dull walls, worry not. The exhibit promises to be as striking and unusual as its namesake, with carefully selected pieces to maximise the impact of the theme. One which you will surely need to see to appreciate fully. Curated by video artist and Northumbria Uni student, Sophia Gourley and graduate photographer Liam Cox, the exhibit promises to be dynamic, if nothing else. Exhibited pieces will consist of the labours of 13 Northumbria University students across a range of ages and disciplines, which perhaps explains the insubstantial and ethereal theme. With that much space to bounce ideas in and with 13 minds bouncing them, there needs to be plenty of room to manoeuvre. Knitted together by vague strands of thematic similarity, the inspiration and medium of each of the artists will be different, adding something to the appeal of the exhibit you won’t find anywhere else. Where Is My Mind? will pay a fleeting visit to the Sanctuary space between Monday 22nd April and Thursday 2nd May. As the website itself promises: “Your head will collapse, But there’s nothing in it, And you’ll ask yourself… Where Is My Mind? http://www.kyeo.tv/2013/04/19/where-is-my-mind-collaborative-art-seeks-sanctuary/ A collective of work of all disciplines by 13 of the North East's up and coming new artists… Sophia Gourley, Liam Cox, Lorna Brady,Danny Wood, Zoe Plant, Chris Welton, Νatalie Κωνσταντίνου, Michelle Justice, Holly Duckworth, Chereen Prescott, Adam Carr, Ricky James and BChemical Child. In the spirit of Halloween and all that is morbid, Photographer, Joel-Peter Witkin’s macabre photographs document the fringe and distort reality. They read as graphic vintage yet modern, photoshop fictions, but are actually crafted through traditional photographic processing methods. Witkin’s disturbed imagery comes from incident that he witnessed as a small child; a car accident occurred in his neighborhood in which a young girl was decapitated. “It happened on a Sunday when my mother was escorting my twin brother and me down the steps of the tenement where we lived. We were going to church. While walking down the hallway to the entrance of the building, we heard an incredible crash mixed with screaming and cries for help. The accident involved three cars, all with families in them. Somehow, in the confusion, I was no longer holding my mother’s hand. At the place where I stood at the curb, I could see something rolling from one of the overturned cars. It stopped at the curb where I stood. It was the head of a little girl. I bent down to touch the face, to speak to it — but before I could touch it someone carried me away” Much of his work was created in Mexico to get around restrictive U.S. laws and the use of corpses. Witkin’s images violate basic moreLs and sensibilities causing shock and negative reviews. His techniques draw on early Daguerreotypes and on the work of E.J. Bellocq. http://www.edelmangallery.com/witkin.htm |
